Well Ways – a traveller’s guide to wellbeing for families of people with mental illness

This multi-family support and education program provides up to date information

about anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive

disorder, schizoaffective disorder, borderline personality disorder and dual diagnosis.

The eight-week course also provides useful insights into behaviours associated with

mental illness and helps participants develop practical frameworks to improve

communication and problem solving skills.

Family and Friends Support Group
 


Meets  each month and provides

ongoing support and education to

families and friends of people living

with mental illness.

Each month opportunities are provided

to discuss issues of concern and to

focus on a particular aspect of mental

illness to increase understanding and

knowledge of participants.

The group is facilitated by professional

staff from MIFNQ and Qld Carers

 

 

 

Eating Disorders Information Program for Family and Friends

Having someone that you care about experience an eating disorder can be a

worrying, frustrating and confusing experience. Feelings of helplessness, anger,

fear and despair are common. MIFNQ in conjunction with other professional

people working in the area and individuals who have a personal experience, are

offering a six-week education and support program specifically for family and

friends of people with eating disorders. Each session deals with a topic related to

dealing with the effects of an eating disorder in the family.

ROADS Education Program for Families and Friends of Young People

with Recent Onset Psychosis

Families who are experiencing psychosis for the first time often feel overwhelmed,

 despairing, anxious and isolated. MIFNQ in partnership with Integrated Mental

Health Services offers a six-week family education and support program to help

families gain information, knowledge and understanding of psychosis. Sessions

cover treatment options, the role of stress, managing difficult behaviours and

maintaining hope and recovery.

·        Session Four:  Understanding schizophrenia & schizoaffective disorder, principles of treatment for mental illness & the mental health legal system

 

·        Session Five:   Understanding bipolar disorder & equipping yourself for the journey

 

·        Session Six:  Understanding dual diagnosis (mental illness & alcohol &/or drug use) & the mental health & carer support  systems

 

·        Session Seven:  Understanding borderline personality disorder & reducing stress related to mental illness by improving communication techniques
