Mental Illness Fellowship Lobbying and Advocacy Group
MIFNQ is developing a data base of members and friends, who have an interest in improving the well being of people with mental illness, their families and friends.
We would like to harness the collective muscle, (as well as intelligence, ideas and capacities) of our members and friends to let politicians know that mental health is an important issue. With one in five Australians living with mental illness, not only is mental illness and mental health important, it should be very high on the agenda of all our politicians.
Rather than wait until our next local, state or federal election, MIFNQ wants to establish a vibrant advocacy network now. We will then be able to take advantage of opportunities to make a difference as and when they arise. We are particularly interested in influencing government policy, not just in mental health, but in related areas such as housing and employment.
To get the ball rolling, we are developing an Advocacy Data Base with information about members and friends who wish to be involved in MI FLAG. We need to know if you are interested in helping us, the level of involvement you wish to undertake and how often you would be able to participate in Advocacy activities.
The state and federal government currently have mental health firmly on their agenda. The Queensland government has responded to its health crisis by increasing the mental health budget by $201m but we need to ensure that this money is allocated to achieve the best outcomes for individuals and families. We need to let government know what we think.
